Since its inception, the EPWRF has built up expertise in some major areas of economic research and analysis. Even while pursuing specific research studies on India's macro economy, the EPWRF has been focusing on systematic compilation and dissemination of consistent current and long data series on various sectors of the Indian economy, as also its social sectors. In recognition of the EPWRF's expertise in data build-up, the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) has awarded a Data Base Project to it. This was followed by yet another Data Base Project bestowed on it by the ICICI Limited [ICICI's Research Centre activities are now looked after by the Centre for Advanced Financial Studies (CAFS), Institute of Financial Management and Research (IFMR), Chennai]. These are in addition to the substantial research support extended by the Reserve Bank of India, as also by banks, financial institutions and some private organisations. The EPWRF has thus committed itself to producing current as well as long data series on such themes as national accounts, state domestic product (SDP), Annual Survey of Industries (ASI), physical infrastructure, money and banking, the country's external accounts and many others. The EPWRF has also been associated with the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) since 1999 in the latter's study on Household Savings as part of its more comprehensive study on the Micro Impact of Macro-Economic Policies (MIMAP). Earlier, the Government of Maharashtra had awarded a special research project to EPWRF on the documentation of Latur and Osmanabad earthquake rehabilitation experience, under which the institution had brought out eight major reports and submitted them to the Government of Maharashtra. Apart from bringing out a comprehensive publication on National Accounts Statistics of India (four successive editions), the Foundation has just published a study on Domestic Product of States of India: 1960-61 to 2000-01 (EPWRF June 2003). Earlier, it brought out a major 1200-page study on Annual Survey of Industries: 1973-74 to 1997-98: A Data Base on the Industrial Sector in India (EPWRF April 2002). Besides, the EPWRF has already published about 35 sets of Special Statistics invariably presenting long 45-50 year time series along with a description of the related conceptual and methodological issues and the quality of data. These studies have concerned evolution of poverty estimates in India, industrial statistics, wholesale and consumer price indices, balance of payments, foreign trade, external debt and exchange rate statistics and some social sector development indicators (see Publications). As part of this scheme of disseminating data, the EPWRF has also been putting out regular statistics on central and state government finances, the financial system and the money market. EPWRF's regular studies on the money market, which are being published in the EPW as Monthly Money Market Reviews once every month continuously since October 1994, are considered as an important and uninterrupted source of statistics and reviews on the subject in India. Likewise, a special issue of the EPW every year is devoted to money, banking and finance in which Special Statistics on the subject with historical series are presented. |
